ERNST CARAMELLE
at Lawrence Markey
San Antonio, TX
April 2–May 8, 2009
Lawrence Markey is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition of work by Ernst Caramelle. This will be the fifth solo exhibition of Caramelle’s work at Lawrence Markey and the first in San Antonio.
Ernst Caramelle was born in Tyrol, Austria in 1952. He currently lives and works in Frankfurt, Karlsruhe & New York.
Since his first exhibition in the mid-1970’s, Ernst Caramelle has created a diverse body of work shifting from video works to drawings, photographs, paintings and wall installations.
The exhibition will feature Ernst Caramelle's most recent panel paintings, as well as a new wall painting for the San Antonio gallery.
While the coherent feature of Ernst Caramelle’s art may be a stubborn defiance of adhering to any one style or modus operandi, his work is often site specific. For this exhibition Caramelle will execute one of his site-specific gestures of ephemera: wall painting. Caramelle’s interventions are at once richly colorful, geometric abstractions, and illusionistic, expanding architectures; part sensuous “painting”, part deceptive spatial verisimilitude. The heart of the exhibition will be a group of recent panel paintings, completed over the past two years.
A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, and is available for sale from the gallery. The publication will focus on Ernst Caramelle’s exhibitions at Lawrence Markey from 1993 to 2009, featuring views of the exhibitions and pages from Caramelle’s notebooks.
